"Coach Jay's summer training was fantastic for my son.
We were looking for the next level up for him and everything promised was delivered and more."
Coach Jay is accessible (to both kids and adults), responsive and attentive and most importantly clearly very knowledgeable.
Even as a lay person, I can see that my son is significantly stronger, faster, more flexible and has a better range of motion than when he started. He loved the challenge of the comprehensive program and is completely bursting at the seams for his first race.
Thanks Coach!
- Jill M., mother of a high school athlete
"The results of Jay's training program are real."
My senior son and freshman daughter both participated in the program. Each of them had a program designed for them. The workouts were easy to follow once they viewed short videos from the video library provided to them.
As a parent who is now coaching their high school team, we are implementing many of the pieces into our workouts. Both of my kids are stronger and have increased their speed and endurance a great deal. They are prepared for the demands of cross country season and are excited to run. They work to achieve championship sleep for recovery and make sure to continue with rope stretching and other mobility work.
Jay’s Summer Program has been a valuable training experience in our house and I highly recommend anyone who wants to help their high school runner make strides in their running to do the program.
- Eva M., mother and coach of a high school and middle school athlete

I was just like you.
I was a high school athlete who didn’t have a plan in the off-season. I know what it’s like to be fired up to train and dying to improve, but not know where to start.
As I explained in Consistency Is Key, it was a relief when I started running at the University of Colorado. I not only had a plan, but also a coach who could explain the rationale behind everything we did.
You don’t have to wait until college to have that same experience. I can help you make a jump in fitness this summer – a jump you need to make if you’re going to have the best XC season of your life – by giving you a daily, well-designed training plan.
We’ll then stay in close contact via emails and webinars (which are recorded if you can’t join me live) so that you get your questions answered.
A bit about me
I’ve coached high school, collegiate, and professional runners for more than two decades, including three USATF champions in cross country, indoor track, and road racing. I studied kinesiology and applied physiology at the University of Colorado, where I was a member of the varsity cross country team featured in Chris Lear's cult-classic Running with the Buffaloes. I earned my M.S. in Kinesiology and Applied Physiology from CU in 2000. I ran modest PRs of 3:49.5/1,500m, 8:20/3,000m, 14:20/5,000m and 30:15/10,000m.
I’ve written two books. Consistency Is Key: 15 Ways to Unlock Your Potential as a High School Runner was published in June 2020 and has sold over 10,000 copies. Simple Marathon Training: The Right Training for Busy Adults with Hectic Lives has helped hundreds of runners toe the starting line injury-free and ready to PR.
I‘ve written for brands such as Nike, sites like PodiumRunner.com, and magazines including the much beloved but defunct Running Times. I’ve been quoted in several publications, including Wired, Outside, and Runner's World.
I post videos weekly on my YouTube channel, which has over 2.5 million views. I post on Instagram, Twitter, and LinkedIn each week, though I typically don’t respond to DMs. You can email me at [email protected] if you think I can be helpful. For coaching inquiries put “coaching” in the subject line and I’ll get back to you promptly.

More about how my training works.
You want to get fit this summer and be ready to run PRs this fall. In order to do that you need personalized training. You’ll need progression runs and long runs, and you’ll need a thoughtful progression of strides to be ready to race fast in the spring.
Plus, you need to do the “little things” - strength and mobility work, as well as soft-tissue work – to stay injury-free.
Remember, if you can stay injury-free and have “consistency” describe this ssummer's training, you’ll almost certainly PR in the spring.
The problem for most high school runners is they don’t have a comprehensive plan that combines all of these elements (if they have a plan at all). Any athlete dedicated enough to train in the summer should have a comprehensive plan.
I’ve been in your shoes and I can help you get fit this summer with an easy-to-follow training plan. You’ll understand why we do what we do, which will give you the confidence to get out the door in the summer months to put in the work. There will be plenty of challenging workouts and long runs, coupled with regenerative easy days.
Here’s how it works. You enroll for my coaching. Then you fill out the intake form (which you’ll take your time with) and I’ll use this to write your training. If I have questions, I’ll reach out to you to ensure that the training I write fits your specific needs and current fitness level.
Then it’s time for you to learn the system by watching the quick-start videos. After you watch those, you’ll email me questions or join me on the webinars to ask them. If you can’t make the webinars, you’ll both get the recordings within 48 hours and be able to ask questions beforehand.
If you make consistency your goal and get in 95% of the assignments, you’ll start team practices ready to have the best track season of your life.
But here’s the deal...
A hodgepodge of social media-sourced workouts and core strength exercises aren’t going to give you the best summer of training possible.
They might even lead to you being injured, since social media focuses on the hard days and not the recovery days needed to absorb workouts. The reality is that the self-coached athlete is often the most injured athlete. Don’t let that be you.
Join me this summer and get expert training to set yourself up for a fantastic track season.
