John O’Malley, Dr. Jeff Messer and Jeff Boelé – Episode 015 – Coaching Runners Podcast

February 17, 2020 by Jay Johnson

Three former guests on the podcast discuss a variety of topics, starting with a definition of the term “speed” and how that term fits into the training of distance runners. Specifically, Jeff Boelé and John O’Malley discuss acceleration and why it may or may not be useful for distance runners.

The conversation then moves on to a discussion of terminology across a spectrum of intensities, including threshold and vVo2max running. Later in the podcast John and Jeff Boelé address a question Joan Hunter submitted regarding sub-max velocity work and their answers are fantastic.

This podcast is in many ways an extension of the conversations these three men and Jay Johnson have been engaging in via a text thread for the past year.

While technical at times, the majority of the information in this podcast will be useful for coaches with two years of experience, coaches with 20 years of experience and everyone in between.

Below is the 20-minute video of Jeff Boelé’s neural session practice, the video that John O’Malley says is a must-watch.

If you’d like some transcribed excerpts of this podcast please join my email list via the sidebar to your right.

Finally, John, Dr. Messer and Jay all spoke at the 2020 Boulder Running Clinics and at the end of the podcast Jay shares a coupon code that will give you $10 off those videos. Visit BoulderRunningClinics.com to purchase the videos.

Jeff Messer, PhD – Episode 004 – Coaching Runners podcast

January 9, 2019 by Jay Johnson

Dr. Jeff Messer serves as department chair for the Exercise Science Department at Mesa Community College, Mesa, Arizona. Dr. Messer also serves as a volunteer assistant coach for boys’ cross-country and track-&-field at Desert Vista High School, Phoenix, AZ.

In addition, Dr. Messer serves as a personal coach for professional runner Jessica Tonn.

Dr. Messer is the former head coach for girls’ cross-country at Xavier College Preparatory (Phoenix, AZ.) and Desert Vista High School.

In this interview, we discuss post-workout nutrition, mitochondrial quality, how Dr. Messer ensures neuromuscular training is part of every training session, and what his longer practices – the 2 hours and 45-minute sessions entail.

I’m fortunate to call Dr. Messer a friend and I hope you enjoy listening to this interview as much as I enjoyed recording it.

Here is a fantastic video of a Workout Wednesday Flotrack did when Jeff was coaching at Desert Vista.

Jeff is featured on Season 1 of High School Running Coach. Here is a short summary of Jeff’s training philosophy, here are highlights from the Q&A with Jeff, here is a HSRC member’s take on Jeff’s coaching philosophy.

Jeff has presented twice at the Boulder Running Clinics – you can watch free excerpts from his presentations here.

This episode of the Coaching Runners podcast is brought to you by the Fundamentals Education Course and the Boulder Running Clinics. Two great resources for coaches who are looking to take their program to the next level.

The Best Resource for High School Coaches

June 22, 2017 by Jay Johnson

High School Running Coach is a site that features 22 of the best coaches in the country, such as Timo Mostert of American Fork and Doug Soles of Great Oak.

Here is cross country training from two featured coaches coaches: Adam Kedge of Albuquerque Academy and Dr. Jeff Messer, formerly of Desert Vista.

Adam Kedge’s training – http://bit.ly/2sZoW1y

Dr. Messer’s training – http://bit.ly/2rWmgBW

Many coaches tell us the site has had a much bigger impact on their coaching than all of the clinics they’ve attended, which is the goal of the site.

High School Running Coach is a membership site and the format is simple. Coaches share their training documents for a season – cross country or outdoor track – and then we do an audio interview to tease out aspects of the training that might not be clear. These interviews are available to members as streaming audio on the site or as a transcript. Finally, the coaches answer member’s questions in the members only forum.

Season 1 featured twelve coaches, Season 2 featured ten coaches. Each coach has submitted a key workout that we’ve made into a 38 page document. It’s a fantastic resource, which you can download for free when you visit HighSchoolRunningCoach.com.

If you become a member you have access to the content indefinitely. You can become a member of Season 1 or Season 2, or both. If you become a member of both seasons you’ll receive a 555 page book that contains all of the information for Season 1. The feedback on the book is that it’s a tremendous resource (and one that some people prefer over getting the information digitally).

Podcast 015 – Dr. Jeff Messer (rebroadcast)

December 6, 2015 by CoachJay

Dr. Jeff Messer is both a high school coach and an exercise physiologist.  He is widely recognized as one of the best high school coaches in the country.

This interview is a rebroadcast of an interview between myself and Dr. Messer from my old CoachJayJohnson.com podcast.  At the time of that recording Dr. Messer was coaching at Xavier College Prep; he now coaches at Desert Vista, both in the Phoenix, AZ.

Dr. Messer has presented at the Boulder Running Clinics.  You can watch excerpts from his presentations for free on YouTube (this video in ice baths is good) or you can purchase the entire presentation – both video and audio files – at BoulderRunningClinics.com.

Jeff is a fantastic human and I’m lucky to count him as a friend.  I hope you enjoy listening to the interview as much as I enjoyed recording it.
