Kim O’Malley – Episode 010 – Coaching Runners Podcast

December 23, 2019 by Jay Johnson

Kim O’Malley is a Youth Development Specialist with 20 years of experience designing and delivering leadership curriculum in a wide range of settings. Kim has been a public high school teacher, head cross-country and track coach, an outdoor trip leader, a parent education facilitator and a professional development coach, blogger, public speaker, mom, and seasoned ultra-marathoner.

Kim’s coaching career began as an undergraduate student at Northwestern University when upon discovering the university lacked a running program- started her own. She co-founded Northwestern’s running club, served as its president and coach, and eventually elevated the program to varsity status at which it remains today.

Kim has successfully led large co-ed cross-country and track programs with diverse populations in California and Colorado.

She led the North Monterey County girls’ cross-country team to the first sectional championships for any girl’s program in the school’s history while focusing on holistic coaching practices that prioritized personal wellness, character development, and leadership.

As a program manager for the national non-profit organization Girls Leadership and a curriculum specialist for the Girl’s Athletic Leadership School network (GALS INC), Kim is committed to equipping teachers, coaches, parents and students with the tools they need to bring holistic, relationship-based teaching and learning into the arena. Kim’s career reflects her life-long passion for connecting leadership, athleticism, and social-emotional development.

In this interview Kim discusses how coaches can “coach the whole athlete,” a topic Kim will cover in detail at the 2020 Boulder Running Clinics. She also discusses Social Emotional Learning and how coaches can use that framework when working with their athletes.

Four Businesses that you need to know about

May 10, 2015 by CoachJay

I spent Friday at a rainy track meet in Longmont, Colorado. The St. Vrain invitational is one of the best track meets in the state, put on by Jeff Boele and Mark Roberts, two fantastic coaches and fantastic people.

I have four businesses that sponsored the meet, which meant I also got to set up a booth at the meet.

The Boulder Running Camps is a camp for high school runners I’ve been the director of for the past 15 years. It’s my baby. The two weeks of camp are the best two weeks of the year for me. [Read more…]

Two things you need to know about the Boulder Running Clinics February 2015 Clinic

February 19, 2015 by CoachJay

Here are the two primary things you need to know about the Boulder Running Clinics February 2015 Sports Science Clinic, which starts tomorrow.

First, you don’t have to be in attendance to get your FREE pair of Newton Kismet shoes, which retail for $127.  The wear testers at Competitor magazine have raved about these shoes and we are fortunate that Newton is giving a pair to everyone who signs up for the clinic.

Second, we will video all the presentations and, by mid-March, will send links so you can watch the videos on your computer, tablet or phone.

The list of speakers is fantastic, as are the topics they will be presenting.  Click here to check out the schedule.

Registration is $147 but if you use the code “blog20” you will get $20 off your registration.

This means that for $127 you will get a pair of great shoes and you will get nine videos showcasing some of the brightest minds in the world of running, talking about topics they think you need to understand.

To register, click here.  Registration ends at 4 pm MST tomorrow (Friday, February 20th, 2015)

Have questions?  I can answer them at coachjayjohnson@gmail.com .

Thanks for reading.  New blog posts coming next week.

My slides from the 08.03.13 Boulder Running Clinics

March 18, 2014 by CoachJay

Two things.  First, you should join the newsletter because later this week I’ll be giving 25% off the Boulder Running Clinic videos.

Second, here are my slides from the two presentations that I shared.  The first presentation is titled “Is Periodization Dead?  Metabolic Considerations, Neuromuscular Considerations and Peaking” and the second is titled “Planning a session, a microcycle, a mesocycle and a macrocycle.”  Obviously a set of slides doesn’t take the place of actually watching and listening to a presentation, but at least you will get a sense of what the presentations are about.

Finally, let me share two quick comments from people who have already seen all six of the videos from the clinic.

The first is from an adult runner.

The Boulder Running Clinics presentations will serve as an ultimate runner’s guide for me during my 10k and half marathon preparation this year and hopefully more (marathon) next year! This information isn’t just for coaches….the presentations have been very eye opening. Especially being backed by significant data from Dr. Messer and Dr. Hansen concerning topics such as: healthy progressive training stimuli, hill training, macronutrients and synthesis, concurrent training, ancillary work, and identifying cause of injury with recovery methods.  I greatly look forward to applying these gems from the Boulder Running Clinics to my training this year. Thank you!

The second is from my friend Bart Sessa who coaches at Syosset High School.  In 2005 his 4x800m team set the national indoor record of 7:42.22.  Their school record is 7:35.15 (outdoor).  Wow!

My first thought after watching these videos was “I just became a better coach”.  Not for the total beginner coach but if you have a philosophy on coaching they show why certain methods may or may not work. All the presenters unselfishly share all of their research which you and I don’t have time to do. From workouts to recovery foods to exercises to incorporate within our program the presenters leave no stone unturned.  I was constantly “at the edge of my seat” anxious to hear what he was going to share next.  Great to listen to twice. The first time around just to listen. The second time to take notes.

Obviously I’m proud to get such nice feedback on a clinic that Dr. Messer, Dr. Hansen and myself took very seriously.  Again, join the newsletter so you can get 25% off the videos when we release them later this week.  And if you want a taste of what the videos look like, you can watch this playlist of seven short excerpts from Dr. Messer and Dr. Hansen’s presentations.
