Four Businesses that you need to know about

May 10, 2015 by CoachJay

I spent Friday at a rainy track meet in Longmont, Colorado. The St. Vrain invitational is one of the best track meets in the state, put on by Jeff Boele and Mark Roberts, two fantastic coaches and fantastic people.

I have four businesses that sponsored the meet, which meant I also got to set up a booth at the meet.

The Boulder Running Camps is a camp for high school runners I’ve been the director of for the past 15 years. It’s my baby. The two weeks of camp are the best two weeks of the year for me. [Read more…]

Sunday Morning Reads – 02.09.14

February 9, 2014 by CoachJay

Good morning.

How did you sleep last night?  Did you get enough sleep to have a good run this morning?  Here is a fantastic infographic about sleep (click the graphic to enlarge it).  Campers at the Boulder Running Camps hear my say this every year: your mom wants you to change your diet to become a better runner, yet the campers probably don’t get enough sleep to support your training.  Obviously having both dialed in is best but sleep, along with hydration, is almost always undervalued by high school runners, as well as collegiate and adult runners.  I slept 9 hours every night during college to support 85 miles a week in singles.  For me it was the only way to handle the training.  The importance of sleep for runners can not be overstated.

Check out this short story on a Alan Feneca, former NFL lineman who broke 4 hours.  I would love to know what his training program looked like, specifically his long runs.  With his fiber type you could argue that a cross fit endurance approach might be good, as long as he’s getting in a few long-long runs where he teaches his body to utilize fat as a fuel source.

Finally, Alan Webb is moving on to the triathlon.  I wish him the best and I can’t wait to follow this story.  Remember, Webb ran in 27:34.72 for 10,000m.

Have a great week and look for a couple of posts this week.

Thanks to Skyler Cummins for helping with this week’s reading.

Podcast 018 – Adam Kedge on Team Culture

August 27, 2013 by CoachJay

In this video Adam Kedge of Albuquerque Academy talks about building a team culture.  Adam has been named the national cross country coach of the year and his boys team his finished third at the Nike Cross Nationals.  If you have time, check out this article Adam wrote two years ago on advice he would give a new high school coach.

Adam Kedge at Boulder Running Camps

July 11, 2012 by CoachJay

On Thursday, July 19th, Adam Kedge of Albuquerque Academy will be speaking at the Boulder Running Camps.  The talk is open to public, but specifically I’m hoping local high school coaches will be able to attend.
Adam’s boys team have twice been ranked #1 in the nation by Marc Bloom’s Harrier magazine.  Maybe more impressive is that fact that they’ve made the Nike Cross Nationals most every year the event has been held.
With that in mind, Adam’s first talk will be focused on what he does to get his teams to qualify for the Nike Team Nationals.  There will be plenty of time for questions following that talk.
His second talk will be focused on working with Curtis Beach, who set the high school national record in the decathlon under the guidance of Coach Kedge.  I think it’s interesting that Adam had to coordinate Curtis’s work with his various event coaches and I think we can all learn from that experience.
I will have the talks on video in some format, but I can’t promise when they’ll be available. [Read more…]

Another Day, Another Beautiful Run

July 23, 2010 by CoachJay

The title says it all and if you have 4 minutes the armchair runner in you will enjoy this.

…and some funny running attire too.

Thanks to Patrick for all of his hard work this week – he’s been a tremendous addition to the camp.
