Private Coaching

You know there is untapped potential in your running. You recognize having a coach to guide you through specific training would maximize your efforts and help you achieve your goals.

Hiring a private coach allows you to have an individualized training plan based on your lifestyle and the support you need when stressors or unexpected events impact your training. You’re more likely to stay healthy, gain strength and fitness, and are given the tools only a world-class coach with more close to 20 years of experience can offer.

My goal is to keep you injury free, and help you realize your potential as a runner. My training philosophy is rooted in my experience coaching elite athletes and busy adult runners with hectic lives. We will work together to:

  • Develop the aerobic metabolism so that you can run well from 5k through the marathon (and even Ultras).
  • Give you specific strength and mobility exercises to keep you injury free and allow you to improve your aerobic fitness.
  • Give you customized training that will allow you to train at your highest potential. You’ll get feedback to ensure that you’re training the right way for your unique life stresses.

With private coaching you have access to proven training plans, training that will give you the confidence to race successfully, and offer the guidance you need to reach each of your goals.

As a runner who had qualified for the Boston Marathon, but was constantly battling injuries, I came to Coach Jay with the simple goal of staying healthy and possibly getting a little faster in the process.  Coach Jay has certainly helped me meet these goals and then some!  In addition to giving me a training schedule for running, he has also educated me on the importance of doing general strength.  I have no doubt that Coach Jay’s guidance with the ancillary work – what to do, when to do it and how to do it, has forever changed my running for the better and has kept me healthy and able to train consistently!

Over the course of about a year and a half of working with Coach Jay, I have improved my marathon time by over 36 mins, dropped my half marathon time by nearly 15 minutes and shaved more the 2 mins from my 5k personal best.  More importantly, in addition to the significant PR’s, I have stayed healthy.  Thanks to Coach Jay, I am running times I could have only dreamed possible and have enjoyed running more than ever!

After being a very competitive runner in high school I ran only occasionally as a young adult to stay in shape.  20 years later I finally had time to train more seriously and wanted to tackle the marathon.  Jay’s approach was thoughtful and holistic focusing just as much on strength, flexibility and injury prevention as on running itself.  Working with him was like earning a masters degree in running.  He took me through my first runs of over 10 miles, then through longer and longer distances until my first marathon after 6 months of careful work.  A year later, after continuing to build on the foundation Jay taught me, I qualified for the Boston Marathon, all while feeling great and avoiding any serious injuries.  I’d highly recommend Jay to any runner at any level interested in unlocking their potential and reaching for goals that may have once seemed impossible.”

I’ve been working with Jay for about a year, and can’t say enough good things about the experience. I didn’t run in high school or college—I started in my early 20s. I managed to significantly reduce my times from the 5K to the marathon on my own in the past 15 years, and grew to love running so much that I’ve made writing and learning about it a big part of my career.

But after my third stress fracture in 2013, not to mention times that were no longer improving, I knew I needed help to truly reach my potential without crashing and burning. Jay is the full package—of course, he brings a wealth of knowledge from his experience coaching elite and collegiate athletes. But he also has a keen understanding of the competing demands on working adults’ lives. He’s helped me prioritize, organize, and know when to hold back and when to push harder. As a result, I’ve had a year of consistent training and solid performances, and really feel I’m poised for a breakthrough year in 2015 … even though I’ll be six years older than when I ran my marathon PR. I definitely wouldn’t be where I am without his support and assistance!”
